Numerical Simulations of Cryogenic Hydrogen Cooling in Vortex Tubes with Smooth Transitions

Improving efficiency of hydrogen cooling in cryogenic conditions is important for the wider applications energy systems. The approach investigated this study based on a Ranque-Hilsch vortex tube (RHVT) that generates temperature separation working fluid. simplicity RHVT also valuable characteristic In present work, novel shapes are computationally with goal to raise process. Specifically, smooth transition arranged between chamber, where compressed gas injected, and main two exit ports at ends. Flow simulations have been carried out using STAR-CCM+ software real-gas Redlich-Kwong model temperatures near 70 K. It determined moderate size manifests about 7% improvement when compared tubes use traditional chambers stepped transitions no-chamber setup direct injection.
